How should furniture that has been infested by moths be protected against further moth damage? If the furniture has already been infested by insects, first take out and clean the items inside the infested furniture. For those that cannot be washed, put them in the sun to dry. Wipe the furniture several times with a disinfectant solution, and after wiping it clean, let it ventilate thoroughly and dry completely. For wooden furniture damaged by borers or termites, a small amount of insecticidal liquid (DDVP) can be dropped into the insect holes. You can also mash sharp chili peppers or Chinese prickly ash into a paste and stuff it into the insect holes. Alternatively, apply paraffin oil to the areas damaged by insects, and apply it continuously for 10 days. However, it should be remembered that pesticides and paraffin oil should not be used on furniture such as cupboards and other tableware furniture.
Four Methods of Insect Prevention
Prevention of Moth Damage with Brine and Chili Pepper Water
To prevent solid wood furniture from being damaged by moths, you can apply concentrated brine to the surface several times, which can play a role in preventing moth damage. Another method is to take an appropriate amount of sharp chili peppers or Chinese prickly ash, crush them into powder, stuff them into the moth holes, and pour boiling water into the holes. This has the effect of killing insects and can prevent the spread of moth damage.
Prevention of Moth Damage with Camphor Oil
Dip cotton in camphor oil to make camphor cotton balls, and place them in pianos, wooden furniture, wardrobes, and kitchen countertops. This can repel cockroaches and prevent moth damage.
Prevention of Moth Damage with Insecticide Water
Mix kerosene and a small amount of insecticide water evenly and drop the mixture into the moth holes, which can also kill the moths. However, this method is not suitable for bamboo utensils such as baskets and cupboards that store food. Try to spray insect prevention water during or after the decoration. Pure wooden furniture purchased must be ensured to have been treated against insects.
Pay Attention to Applying Varnish on New Furniture
If possible, after buying new furniture, it is best to apply a coat of varnish on the surface of the unpainted wooden boards inside the furniture. This can not only enhance the aesthetic appeal but also prevent insect infestation. For some corners that have not been damaged yet, use coatings such as raw tung oil, shellac paint, or varnish to paint the surface of the wooden cabinet, so as to isolate the moths from the air and achieve the purpose of preventing moth damage. |
