Characteristics and Testing of Environmentally Friendly ABS Edge BandingIn addition to being aesthetically pleasing and durable, modern furniture should also possess excellent intrinsic qualities. Due to ABS's low shrinkage rate and high heat distortion temperature, it boasts good dimensional stability and will not undergo excessive shrinkage or expansion due to large temperature differences. In contrast, traditional PVC edge banding has a low heat distortion temperature and contains plasticizers and other additives with certain migration and extractability properties, resulting in poorer dimensional stability compared to ABS edge banding. When stored or transported improperly, PVC edge banding is prone to deformation and shrinkage, which affects the appearance and firmness of furniture.
Testing methods for edge banding:Visually inspect whether the color and texture of the edge banding match those of the board used, or whether they meet the designer's requirements;Check whether the surface of the edge banding is smooth and flat, and whether there are any impurities or spots. If there are impurities, spots, or fine hair-like pinholes, it may be made of recycled miscellaneous PVC materials;Check whether the back of the edge banding is flat.
You can use a flat blade to clamp the edge banding horizontally to see if it is straight. If it is not straight, thick glue lines will appear on both sides after edge banding. If the back of the edge banding is flat but thick glue lines still appear after edge banding, you can check in the following ways:Check whether the sawn surface of the board is flat. If the upper and lower saw blades have different specifications during sawing, there will be small steps on the sawn surface, which will affect the edge banding;Check whether the hot-melt adhesive is applied too thickly.
Check whether the adjusted thickness and pressure of the edge banding machine are coordinated. Use a small section of edge banding to perform edge banding, then tear it off forcefully to check whether the bonding strength between the edge banding and the hot-melt adhesive is reasonable and uniform. If the strength is insufficient, it is necessary to check whether the temperature of the hot-melt adhesive in the edge banding machine meets the application standards. Check whether the side of the board is even after trimming. If it is serrated, the possible reasons are as follows: the trimming knife is too blunt; the edge banding is too hard; the edge banding contains too much calcium carbonate. Scratch the edge banding with your nails or other tools. If damage occurs, the surface wear resistance and hardness of the edge banding do not meet the standards, which proves that the quality of the edge banding is unqualified.
