Factors affecting the dimensional stability of PVC edge bandingPVC edge banding is a product mainly made of polyvinyl chloride. It is a type of plastic coiled material produced through several processes after adding some additives such as plasticizers, lubricants, and stabilizers during the production process. It is widely used in our daily lives. However, there is one issue that needs to be pointed out: the dimensional stability of PVC edge banding is not very good. After research, workers have found that there are several factors that have a significant impact on PVC edge banding, which will be elaborated on below.
First, the impact of temperature: Temperature has no significant effect on the dimensional stability of PVC edge banding. The shrinkage rate of PVC edge banding increases with the rise of temperature: the shrinkage rate before edge banding accelerates after 60¡æ and shows a linear growth, while the shrinkage rate after edge banding shows this trend after 70¡æ. Considering that the maximum continuous service temperature of PVC is 65¡æ¡«85¡æ, the experimental temperature is set at 65¡æ.
Second, the impact from the perspective of time: Time has a significant impact on the dimensional stability of PVC edge banding. The shrinkage rate of PVC edge banding shows an upward trend with the increase of time. In an environment of 65¡æ, the shrinkage rate before edge banding tends to be stable after 4 hours, and the shrinkage rate after edge banding tends to be stable after 5 hours. For the convenience of the experiment, the experimental time is set at 4 hours.
Third, the impact from the perspective of humidity: It has little effect on the edge banding that has not been edge-banded. The shrinkage rate of the edge banding after edge banding decreases under high humidity conditions. On the surface, the reason for the decrease is due to the reverse dimensional change of the base material. The specific reason for the change is the stress effect among the base material, glue, and edge banding. Fourth, the impact from the perspective of temperature difference in weather: Thermal cycles have no significant effect on the dimensional stability of PVC edge banding. For PVC edge banding that has been heated, the shrinkage rate basically does not change under low-temperature conditions; during the cycle, it is continuously heated. Although it is still at the same temperature, its shrinkage rate still increases due to the influence of time, but the growth rate is not large.
Fifth, the impact analyzed from its raw materials: This factor has a significant impact on the dimensional stability of plastic edge banding. The shrinkage rates of the three plastic edge bandings are compared as PVC > ABS > PP. It can be seen that PP has the best dimensional stability, followed by ABS, and PVC is the worst. The reason lies in the different heat resistance of the three.
Sixth, the impact from the perspective of craftsmanship: The three factors of processing method, processing equipment, raw material form, and fillers have a significant impact on the dimensional stability of PVC edge banding. Among them, the edge banding obtained by calendering has better dimensional stability than that obtained by extrusion; the edge banding extruded by twin-screw powder has better dimensional stability than that extruded by single-screw granular material; the shrinkage rate of Ay material is lower than that of A+ material, that is, the edge banding with more calcium carbonate content has better dimensional stability than that with less calcium carbonate content.
Seventh, considering the edge banding process, the impact is not significant. Both the board base material and hot-melt adhesive have no significant impact on the dimensional stability of PVC edge banding. Among them, the shrinkage rate of the edge banding with medium-density fiberboard as the board base material is lower than that with particleboard as the base material, and the difference gradually increases with the rise of temperature. This may mainly be due to the different structures of the two man-made boards. Particleboard has large particles and many gaps, while medium-density fiberboard has small particles and a compact structure. The different structures will show different absorption of hot-melt adhesive, resulting in this situation.
